The Madlanga Commission has postponed the testimony of Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk after accepting a medical affidavit submitted by his legal team.
Van Wyk was due to appear before the commission on Monday, but his attorney, Sandy du Plessis, told the inquiry that he had been suffering from severe panic attacks and was medically unfit to testify. She said a psychiatrist had recommended that he be admitted to a psychiatric facility for further evaluation.
Van Wyk has been subpoenaed in connection with allegations of improper involvement in law enforcement matters and controversial tender-related agreements involving businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
The commission has also been examining allegations linked to a R360-million health risk management contract and Van Wyk’s reported associations with key figures implicated in its investigations.
Although his testimony has been postponed, the commission will continue considering evidence related to Van Wyk, including statements, voice recordings and video material. No new date has yet been set for his appearance.
