EFF leader Julius Malema has called on Parliament’s independent impeachment committee to oppose President Cyril Ramaphosa’s urgent court application aimed at halting proceedings related to the Phala Phala matter.
His comments follow legal advice provided by Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Services Office on Thursday morning, recommending that the committee challenge the application and continue with its work. The advice also emphasised that the committee must remain independent, impartial and guided by its constitutional mandate.
Malema said there was no justification for delaying the process, arguing that the committee should be allowed to carry out its responsibilities without interference.
He maintained that accountability processes must be allowed to run their course and urged the committee to proceed with its investigation in the interests of transparency and constitutional governance.
The impeachment inquiry forms part of ongoing scrutiny surrounding the Phala Phala controversy, which has remained a subject of political and public debate since allegations relating to the theft of foreign currency from the President’s Limpopo farm first emerged.
