Metro Police Chief Yolande Faro has revealed to the Madlanga Commission that not all senior deputy officers have obtained the required security clearance, highlighting significant gaps in the vetting process.
Faro, an officer within the Tshwane Metro Police Department, told the commission that the vetting process is both lengthy and administered by the State Security Agency. However, she emphasised that security clearance should be compulsory from the point of recruitment, particularly for officers in senior positions.
She confirmed that several deputy officers had not undergone the necessary clearance procedures, despite existing requirements. According to Faro, this raises serious concerns about oversight and compliance within the department.
Faro further stressed that the current vetting system needs to be strengthened to ensure accountability and safeguard the integrity of the metro police. She indicated that stricter enforcement and improved coordination with the State Security Agency would be essential to close existing loopholes.
The revelations form part of broader testimony before the commission, which is examining governance and operational challenges within metro policing structures.
