The MK Party has called for the postponement of the upcoming local government elections, pending the outcome of its vote-rigging case against the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
The party alleges that the 2024 general election results were subject to widespread manipulation, maintaining that it was, in fact, the rightful winner of the poll. Central to its claim are reported technical glitches that allegedly caused election results to disappear from the national results dashboard for approximately two hours. The MK Party contends that this incident was not accidental, but a deliberate act aimed at undermining its electoral support and altering the outcome.
According to party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela, the unresolved dispute raises serious concerns about the credibility and integrity of South Africa’s electoral processes. He argues that proceeding with the local government elections before the matter is fully addressed could compromise public trust in democratic institutions.
“The integrity of our elections cannot be taken lightly. This issue must be resolved before South Africans are called to vote again,” Ndhlela said.
The IEC has not publicly conceded to the allegations and has previously maintained that the electoral process was conducted in line with established regulations. However, the MK Party insists that transparency and accountability are essential, and has urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the claims before any further elections take place.
The call for a delay is likely to spark debate among political stakeholders, as concerns over electoral integrity, governance stability, and constitutional timelines come into sharper focus.
