The MK Party says it is frustrated by the legal advice presented to Parliament’s Subcommittee on the Review of Assembly Rules regarding the impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The subcommittee has outlined several procedural steps that must first be completed before an impeachment committee can officially begin its work.
The process relates to an independent panel report which found that President Ramaphosa may have a case to answer in connection with the 2020 burglary at his Phala Phala farm in Limpopo.
The report raised questions around the alleged theft of large sums of foreign currency from the property, as well as the handling and reporting of the incident.
The impeachment process has remained a contentious issue in Parliament, with political parties divided over the legal and procedural requirements needed before any formal inquiry can proceed.
MK Party spokesperson Mzwanele Manyi said the party believes Parliament should obtain a second legal opinion to ensure the process is fair, transparent and constitutionally sound.
Manyi argued that the current legal guidance could unnecessarily delay accountability processes and create uncertainty around Parliament’s oversight role.
He said the party wants clarity on the rules governing impeachment proceedings before the committee begins its work.
