Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaledi, has dismissed concerns about the financial viability and implementation of the National Health Insurance Act.
The Constitutional Court of South Africa is this week hearing a legal challenge brought by the Board of Healthcare Funders and the Western Cape Government.
The case centres on whether the public consultation process that preceded the NHI Act’s passage met constitutional requirements, with applicants arguing that it may have been inadequate.
Motsoaledi said the outcome of the case would be pivotal for the future of healthcare reform in South Africa. He maintains that the National Health Insurance scheme is designed to provide equitable, universal access to quality healthcare services for all citizens, regardless of income.
He added that the government remains committed to implementing the NHI in a phased and sustainable manner, despite ongoing concerns raised by sections of the healthcare sector and some provincial authorities.
