Newly appointed United States ambassador to South Africa, Brent Bozell III, says his top priority is rebuilding relations between Pretoria and Washington.
Bozell presented his letters of credence to Acting Chief of State Protocol, Clayson Monyela, in Pretoria this week, a formal step that clears the way for him to begin his diplomatic duties in South Africa.
In a brief statement, Bozell acknowledged recent tensions in bilateral relations following the return of Donald Trump to the White House. Relations between the two countries have, at times, been strained over foreign policy positions, trade matters and differing approaches to global conflicts.
The United States is one of South Africa’s largest trading partners, with cooperation spanning trade and investment, health programmes, education, energy transition initiatives and security collaboration. Key frameworks include the African Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa), which provides eligible sub-Saharan African countries with duty-free access to the US market.
Diplomatic observers say efforts to stabilise and strengthen ties will be closely watched, particularly ahead of upcoming trade reviews and ongoing engagements through multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and the G20.
Bozell is expected to meet senior government officials, business leaders and civil society representatives in the coming weeks as he outlines Washington’s priorities for the bilateral relationship.
