Forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan faced tough questions in Parliament over why he focused his investigations on former national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane while not pursuing a full probe into senior police official Feroz Khan.
During a meeting of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police, Crossby Shongwe of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party questioned O’Sullivan about the scope of his investigations into alleged corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Shongwe accused Khan of being protected despite allegedly owning lucrative franchise businesses while serving as a public servant in law enforcement. He argued that such business interests should have warranted deeper scrutiny.
Responding to the criticism, O’Sullivan said the investigations conducted by his organisation were limited by resources and its nonprofit status. He explained that decisions on which cases to pursue were guided by the capacity of the organisation and the availability of evidence.
O’Sullivan has previously been involved in several high-profile investigations into corruption within SAPS, including cases linked to procurement irregularities and abuse of office involving senior police officials.
