Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police has welcomed the dismissal of former South African Police Service (SAPS) organised crime head Richard Shiburi.
Committee chairperson Ian Cameron says the decision sends a strong message that misconduct within the police service will not be tolerated and that accountability remains critical to maintaining public trust in law enforcement agencies.
Cameron says decisive action against unethical police officers is essential to protecting the integrity and credibility of SAPS. He adds that officials entrusted with upholding the law must be held to the highest professional and ethical standards.
The committee has reiterated its support for efforts aimed at rooting out corruption and misconduct within the police service, stressing that disciplinary processes must be applied consistently and without fear or favour.
Cameron says strengthening accountability within SAPS is vital to improving public confidence in the criminal justice system and ensuring that police officers serve communities with integrity and professionalism.
