President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged young South Africans to register to vote during the upcoming voter registration weekend, describing participation in elections as a vital part of strengthening the country’s democracy.
Ramaphosa made the appeal while speaking at the launch of the Milestones of Freedom campaign at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The national programme aims to commemorate key milestones in South Africa’s democratic journey, while also promoting social cohesion, active citizenship and improved service delivery across communities.
The voter registration weekend, scheduled for 20 and 21 June, comes ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, which are set to take place on 4 November.
Ramaphosa encouraged young people, particularly first-time voters, to use the two-day registration period to register as voters or update their details with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
He said the participation of young people in democratic processes is essential to shaping the future of the country and ensuring that their voices are represented in government decision-making.
The President also called on all eligible South Africans to verify their registration status and take advantage of the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming municipal elections.
