The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says young people remain among the most vulnerable road users in South Africa, with those aged between 20 and 39 accounting for more than half of all road fatalities.
The corporation warns that inexperience, speeding, distracted driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs continue to contribute significantly to high crash rates across the country.
The RTMC says the risks are heightened during the winter months, when motorists often contend with wet road surfaces, reduced visibility due to fog and rain, and longer stopping distances.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane has urged motorists, passengers and pedestrians to exercise greater caution and remain vigilant at all times.
Zwane says road safety is a shared responsibility, calling on drivers to obey traffic laws, avoid risky behaviour behind the wheel and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling. He also encouraged pedestrians to use designated crossing points and remain alert, particularly in poor weather conditions.
The RTMC has reiterated that responsible road use is critical to reducing fatalities and preventing avoidable crashes on South Africa’s roads.
