The South African Police Union (SAPU) has raised concerns over allegations made by suspended Mpumalanga Police Commissioner Daphney Manamela.
Manamela addressed the media in Mbombela on Sunday morning, where she levelled serious allegations against senior police officials, adding to growing scrutiny within the South African Police Service (SAPS). While details of the claims are still emerging, her remarks have intensified calls for transparency and accountability at the highest levels of policing.
In July 2025, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi took a similar stance when he exposed alleged corruption in the province. That development prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to establish the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to investigate claims of wrongdoing within law enforcement structures.
The commission has since heard testimony from a range of witnesses, with proceedings shedding light on systemic challenges, including allegations of corruption, political interference and internal divisions within SAPS.
Commenting on Manamela’s allegations, SAPU national spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale said the union is deeply concerned about the potential impact of such claims on public trust in the police. He emphasised the need for thorough, independent investigations and urged members of the public to allow due process to unfold.
SAPU has reiterated its call for accountability across all ranks, warning that unresolved allegations risk undermining both morale within the service and confidence in the country’s criminal justice system.
