The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has expressed concern over false and misleading information circulating on social media platforms regarding grant eligibility.
The claims suggest that SASSA has updated its policies to allow foreign nationals to access South African taxpayers’ money under the guise of being asylum seekers and special permit holders.
SASSA has dismissed the claims, saying no changes have been made to its policies or regulations. “There have been no amendments to the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant or to the eligibility criteria,” the agency said.
The agency emphasised that the misinformation is causing confusion among beneficiaries and the general public. “We urge members of the public to rely only on information shared through SASSA’s official communication channels,” the statement read.
SASSA warned that the spread of false information undermines public trust and called on social media users to verify information before sharing it further.
