South Africa has welcomed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important framework for achieving durable peace and promoting regional stability in the Middle East.
The 14-point agreement outlines a roadmap for de-escalation and future negotiations between the two countries following months of heightened tensions. Key provisions include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping, the easing of certain US sanctions on Tehran and a commitment by both sides to engage in further talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive final agreement.
The MoU also provides for a cessation of military operations, measures to facilitate maritime navigation and a 60-day negotiating period during which the parties will seek to resolve outstanding issues, including matters related to Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security concerns.
South Africa said dialogue, diplomacy and adherence to international law remain the most effective means of resolving conflicts and reducing tensions. The government expressed hope that the agreement would contribute to peace, security and economic stability in the region.
The deal has been broadly viewed as a significant diplomatic breakthrough, although analysts caution that its long-term success will depend on the outcome of negotiations towards a final settlement and the implementation of commitments made by both sides.
